Contracted Polio about the age of 8 months and was left with a crippled leg. As a child, Clifford went by the last name of Dunkle, his mother's second husband, out of convenience. As an adult he had his name legally changed to Dunkle.

Before he went to work for General Motors in Dayton, Ohio, he owned and operated a Jewelry Store in Glouster, Ohio, where he sold jewelry and watches and also repaired watches and clocks. Because of the economy of the Glouster area, he was forced to close his store, but he never lost interest in jewelry and the trade of watch and clock repair. He had a keen eye for beautiful jewelry and even designed settings for rings, including one he designed and gave to me for my sixteenth birthday. He was well schooled in the art of watch and clock repair by his mother's cousin, Dayton Ashworth.
