Note: In the year 2000, the King & Queen County Courthouse was remodeled. Prior to the remodeling, there were many portraits of Bagby family members hanging in the actual court room. A new criteria was set during the remodeling process for which pictures would be returned to hang in the court room because of the great number that had been hung in the court room over the years. The new criteria was that a person had to have held public office in King & Queen County, Virginia in order to grace the walls of the court room. The portrait of William Fleet Bagby was the only portrait that met the criteria. William Fleet Bagby held the office of County Clerk. The portraits of the other Bagbys now hang in another room in the courthouse.

More About WILLIAM FLEET BAGBY: Individual Note: No children from second marriage. Occupation: County Clerk for King & Queen County, Virginia.

There is a poem on this site composed by Margaret Thomas "Tom" Rudd, a cousin, in celebration of his 90th birthday. Both William Fleet Bagby and Margaret Thomas "Tom" Rudd were grandchildren of John Christopher Bagby, a.k.a. John Bagby of Bunker Hill.

September 6, 1975

Dear Mrs. Bagbey:

Your letter of Jan 22nd was forwarded to me in Arizona where I spend most of my time and because I had no information there I put it aside to be answered later which I hope may help you some. Like your husband I have very little interest in family beyond most recent generations and am very skeptical about a Bagby (?) coat of Arms. Some years ago my brother's wife had one made for him and when it cost very little to get a second copy, gave me one. Since then I have responded to several offerings to make for me a copy of the "Bagby Coat of Arms". I have received those renditions - all different - and none like the one given to me by my sister-in-law.

A copy of the latest offering is enclosed. It was prepared about three years ago by "Halberts" 3687 Ira Road, Bath, Ohio 44210. I suggest you write Miss Nancy L. Halbert at the above address and see what she has to offer for a "Bagbey" Coat of Arms. I shall be interested to know if she thinks the "E" was added or dropped. One of the authorities wrote me that the family was originally "Begbie". I have not been able to get the first confirmation of that statement.

I have the feeling that too many families trace their lineage back to "three brothers" who came to Jamestown or Plymouth. Our father liked to express himself in rhyme so I am enclosing a poem (?) he composed for a Bagby reunion many years ago. You will note his reference to "three brothers".

You may be confused by the several addresses on this stationary. The printed address is where I spent all of my business life and where I am still given office space. (I go there only occasionally to pick up a check). The stamped Baltimore address is where Mrs. Bagby "Lil" and I retain an anchor and stay on occasions when we come here to visit old friends here, her family on the Eastern shores of Virginia (Accomac County) my family in King and Queen etc. The Arizona address is where I have to spend most of my time because more than 70 years of hard work and fast (?) living have taken their toll and topped them all with emphysema. We are going back to Tucson on next Wednesday.

I regret the delay in answering your letter — for which I can give many excuses but no justifiable reason - but if I can help you farther I will try to respond to your request more promptly.

Yours sincerely,

Harwood Bagby

Below is the poem written by Robert "Harwood" Bagby's father, William Fleet Bagby, of whom he speaks in the letter above:

BAGBY

You request of me a poem upon the Bagby line,
A task for greater talent than ever can be mine,
And yet I want to let you know and make you understand,
That what I am and what I have is e'er at your command.

I deal not with the history, begun sixteen twenty-eight,
When three brothers cameto Jamestown to help to form a state.
They came from Bonnie Scotland, upright men and plain,
They brought along the Scottish bent to hold onto their gain.

They brought along their Bibles, to be their rule and guide,
To keep them in the narrow way, whatever else betide.
They followed the injunction, to multiply in the earth,
Untrammelled by the ugly thought, their's the control of birth.

And so they grew and multiplied, by fives, by ten, by dozens,
'Till ere long in every state, were uncles, aunts and cousins.
Men who stood for what is best, in home, in state, in nation,
Unsoiled by wish for self alone or self aggrandization.

They mostly eschewed politics, went strong on education,
They furnished in peace, in war; men for any station.
They furnished preachers, not a few, men the Truth to tell,
Not only in the homeland, but foreign lands as well.

Such is the Bagby heritage to us this day alive,
A heritage it seems to me to make us all to strive,
To be worthy sons of worthy sires, to keep the scroll unstained,
To make the world a better place, the standard still maintained.
