OBITUARY OF WILLIAM NICHOLAS BAGBY

William Nicholas Bagby, who passed away late Saturday afternoon at a local hospital at the age of 74, was one of the pioneer settlers who watched the great San Juan basin grow from a wilderness into its present state of industrial development, and saw Durango build from a frontier outpost to the metropolis of the southwest; and in this growth he played an important part.

Mr. Bagby was born September 15, 1855, near St. Joseph, Missouri, and moved with his parents to Denver in 1862. He grew to young manhood there and was united in marriage to Maria E. Flynn.

As a young man he entered the cattle business in which he was successful. After disposing of his stock he moved to Animas City in 1880; he had one of the first business establishments in Durango when this city was started in 1880-1881, opening a grocery store.

He was elected assessor of La Plata County in 1885 and served in that capacity for four consecutive terms. After leaving the assessor's office he formed a partnership with John Morlock and operated a furniture store for several years and was afterward superintendent of the Porter Fuel Company properties until the same were sold to the Southern Pacific Railroad Company. Later he was connected with Joseph Coppinger in the sheep business.

Mr. Bagby met with stoicism the privations and hardships that fell to the lot of pioneers and trail blazers and was always faithful to any trust placed upon him.

Surviving the deceased are one son, William Bagby, of Durango, three daughters, Mrs. Georgia Turner of this city, Mrs. Lindemann and Mrs. Still of Chicago. His wife and three children preceded him to the Great Beyond.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at 9:00 from St. Columba's Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Kipp officiating. Interment will be in Greenmount Cemetery under the direction of the Hood Mortuary.
