Baptist Missionary to Brazil
Excerpt from the book, The Bagby's of Brazil, by Helen Bagby [Harrison], speaking of her father, Rev. William Buck Bagby's death, page 152-153:
On the Tuesday following that August 5, Ermine Bagby Sowell, still in ignorance of her loss, arrived in Porto Alegre from Buenos Aires, Argentina. She planned to remain with us several weeks but was taken ill the next Saturday and passed away on Thursday, the eighteenth, apparently a victim of the same virulent germ that had caused Father's death. Conscious of her approaching end, she appealed to us for prayer that she might "die gracefully" and asked the nurses of the Lutheran Hospital to sing "Nearer My God to Thee" at their vesper services.
Let the Baptists of the Argentine republic through their missionary, Miss Minnie D. McIlroy, present their estimate of the pioneer among them:
...she had the happy privilege of knowing from the beginning the work in both countries [Brazil and Argentina]. What joy to see the number of Baptists in Brazil grow to 50,000 [70,000 to be more exact] and the four small churches that, three years after her arrival, formed the River Plate Convention increase to eighty churches with some 6,000 members...
From illustrious forefathers she inherited exceptional gifts, but a truly missionary home was what influenced her to dedicate those gifts to the Master. Her custom of inviting people to her home and church in order to win them, bore a rich harvest. Her very last services at church were blessed by the conversion of two who had accompanied her.
...Her musical gifts were a great boon to the work, and she was much in demand for training choirs and putting on special programs. An excellent interpreter, translating from English to Spanish and writing in both languages easily and well...her homegoing has left a great gap in our ranks.
Her dying testimony, with that of her beloved father, was destined to cause the conversion of some forty [this figure should be fifty-five] persons. Among these was a neighbor who desired "the religion the Bagbys have" and some fifteen girls in Alice Bagby Smith's Bible class.
As we share the sorrow of her loved ones, we rejoice with them for her life of unselfish service to neighbor, friend, family, King. "Her works do follow her."
More About ERMINE BAGBY: Namesake: Ermine for her father's sister, Ermine Bagby.
Notes for SIDNEY M. [REV] SOWELL:
In 1903 the Foreign Mission Board decided to open work in the Argentine Republic and appointed as its first missionary Sidney M. Sowell of Fluvanna County, Virginia. Dr. R.J. Willingham, then secretary of the Board, advised the young man to stop in Brazil on his way out and get adivce from the older missionaries about the best method opening work in a Latin American country.
Of course, the approaching arrival of a young, unmarried minister became a subject of interest among the teachers of the school. One of those teachers was my sister Ermine who was welcomed back to Brazil as an assistant to Mother in the school at Sao Paulo that same year following her graduation from Baylor College. Mother sounded a warning, "Now girls, I don't want that young man to run off with any of my teachers." What then was her surprise one day when, walking out on the front porch (where courting was positively forbidden), she found the blushing Mr. Sowell proposing to her own daughter! "It didn't take but a few minutes," he pleaded. But Ermine's answer was a longer process; he hopefully journeyed on to his destination and returned after two and a half years to claim his bride.

Excerpt from The Bagby's of Brazil, by Helen Bagby [Harrison], page 157-158.
Of Taylor Crawford, the oldest living Bagby, Missionary W.C. Taylor writes to Helen Bagby Harrison:
The public interest in T.C. is now almost as wide as in your father. T.C. is himself a great missionary institution as unique as your father in many ways – himself deserves a biography in time. "Paster Tece," as he is known in Brazil, a graduate of Baylor University and the Southern Baptist Seminary, returned to Brazil with his consecrated wife, nee Fannie Bell Adams, in 1914. For forty years he has centered his life in several pastorates, building thereby two of the strongest churches in the country with their numerous mission chapels, while preaching in and out of season, in and out of doors, in and out of jail, over the entire Brazilian territory. His son Samuel, eldest of six children, carried on the family tradition for several years in Sao Paulo pulpits and is now pastor of Fairmount Avenue Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia.

Bagby, Albert
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 2, 1988 at Twelfth St. Baptist Church for Dr. Albert Ian Bagby, 85, 105 Susan St., Gadsden, who died Thursday, September 29, 1988. Albert Ian Bagby, emeritus Southern Baptist missionary, who served in Brazil for 30 years, was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1903. He was the youngest son of the pioneer missionaries Dr. and Mrs. W.B. Bagby to Brazil where he grew up and came to the U.S. for the first time at the age of 10 years.
At an early age he manifested unusual musical ability and began his studies in music at five years of age. He came to the U.S. and graduated from Baylor University and Southern Seminary in Louisville, KY. While at Baylor, he earned a scholarship to study music in Europe and studied with a renowned professor there who continued to teach him even after the scholarship terminated. While in Europe, he realized that he could never be content with just a musical career but must follow the example of his parents and his five brothers and sisters in the missionary endeavor. He and his wife, Thelma, taught in one of the Baptist Colleges in South Brazil. He was a preacher, Director of the school, taught Bible classes, held revivals and left an indelible mark on hundreds of students.
On retirement in Gadsden, he and his wife continued to serve in many ways as opportunities became available. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Thelma Frith Bagby, Gadsden; three sons, Dr. Albert Ian Bagby, II, El Paso, Texas; Dr. Daniel Bagby, a minister in Texas, and Ron Bagby, who teaches at Gadsden Community College; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Mary Lou Bagby and Mrs. Janet Bagby; four grandchildren, Douglas Bryan, Diana Lee, and Cristina Douglas Bagby; sister, Mrs. Helen Harrison, El Paso; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Anna Bagby Scholarship Fund for the Seminary education of young Brazilian girls. These can be channeled through the Twelfth Street Baptist Church.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Albert I. Bagby, Dr. Daniel Bagby, Ron Bagby, Royce Head, Bill Hale, George Y. Williams, Holly Heard, Jack Fox, Tom Morgan and Cecil Hamiter.
Honorary pallbearers will be Mack Parker and all other personal friends.
The body will remain at the funeral home until one hour prior to the service where it will lie in state at the church. The family will be receiving friends today from 7-9 p.m.
