Original Research Note: Source for middle name: The Shearer-Akers family; Author: Shearer, James William; City of Publication: Somerville, N.J. Publisher: Press of the Somerset Messenger; 1915; page 19. – research submitted by Dan Dunham. — Research speculation: This provides a full middle name for Pleasant C. Bagby; slightly different dates for the birth and death of his first wife Nancy Akers; and the names of her parents. I would guess her mother's maiden name was actually Bryant, as that is the given name of Nancy's first child with Pleasant Bryant Akers Bagby.
More About PLEASANT CAVIEL BAGBY: The current spelling of CAVIEL is taken from the grave marker of his grandson, WILLIAM CAVIEL BAGBY, son of BRYANT A. BAGBY.
More About VIRGINIA CAROLINE LEE: She is listed as JANE C. BAGBY in the 1870 and 1880 Campbell County, Virginia Census Records.
Site Owner Note: The original research provided for this family listed the wives in opposite order of the way the report currently reads. As Census Records and Grave Markers were found, it became apparent the children were grouped incorrectly.

THREE SCORE AND TEN
Uncle John Bagby Sinks to Rest at his Home in Greenup County, Ky. After Six Months of Suffering.
John Bagby was a familiar figure on our streets. For half a century he has been visiting this city every week, and often several times a week. He was one of the successful farmers of lower Greenup county, and has supplied many a Portsmouth table with choice vegetables and products of the field and garden. Being one of the pioneers of the country, he has seen the forest felled, the fields fenced, and the wide Ohio valley transformed form a hunter's paradise, where the wild animals roamed at will, to the luxurious growths of domestic gardening.
He has been a prominent character in this modern development, and hundreds of our readers on both sides of the river will regret to learn that his kindly face will no more be seen on our streets.
He has joined the silent majority in the city of the dead.
Wednesday morning, the 13th inst., at three o'clock, surrounded by his children and friendly watchers at his bedside, his spirit winged its flight to the "great beyond" after the most intense suffering of nearly six months duration.
He was born in Lewis county, Ky., on his father's farm in what is now known as Forman's Bottoms in the year 1819, and passed his seventieth anniversary just seven days before his death. He was naturally of a vigorous constitution, and thought tall and sparely built, was able to and did more than his fellows in the early methods of farming, and it was proverbial that John Bagby led at all contests for championship in the various phases of industrial life on the farm requiring adeptness, and at the husking-bee or the log-rolling he was the hero of the hour.
In April 1838, he took for a life partner Sarah Thompson, who with six children, survives him. For thirty years or more he has resided on a beautiful elevation overlooking the Ohio river two miles below South Portsmouth, and his hospitable home has ever been open to all. He was plain and unostentatious in his ways, but generous in his nature, and unswerving in his fidelity to his friends.
His children are William, of Forman's Bottom, Mrs. Frank Henry, Mrs. Lizzie Dunham, Mrs. Alice Gordon and Anthony or Jack, as he is familiarly known, all of Huntington, W. Va., and Thomas C., who is unmarried and has made his home with his parents.
The funeral was held at the residence Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Joseph McKinster, of the M.E. Church, South and the remains were laid to rest in the Thompson graveyard, near his late residence.
He professed conversion a few days before he was called away and received the ordinance of baptism and the sacrament of the Lord's Supper. His bereaved friends take much comfort in the hope he expressed of a home beyond and the entire surrender and full consecration of his latter days to the Master.
