James Bagby Report
Generation Five
MARTHA HILL BAGBY 5, (JOHN CHRISTOPHER 4, RICHARD 3, JOHN 2, JAMES 1) was born February 1832 at "Bunker Hill" in King & Queen County, Virginia and died About 1870 in Chicot County, Arkansas. She married BENONI CARLTON, the son of BENONI CARLTON and MARY "POLLY" CAMPBELL About 1860 in King & Queen County, Virginia. He was born About 1803 in King & Queen County, Virginia and died February 27, 1873 in Chicot County, Arkansas.
Note: Birth date for MARTHA from Bible Record.
Notes for MARTHA HILL BAGBY:
Religion: Baptist
Notes: Martha Hill Bagby and Benoni Carleton [sometimes spelled Carlton] have been most difficult to find. She was the last of John and Elizabeth Courtney Bagby's children to marry when she and Benoni [Bible for Benjamin] were wed in 1860.
"Poplar Hill" was the name of a Carlton place on route #620 near a spot that once had a Post Office called Favor. The farm was made up of 234-1/2 acres. Those who knew of these Carltons have recalled that "the family left King & Queen for Arkansas".
There is a copy of a deed at the courthouse showing that Benoni Carlton, Sr. in 1860, sold the above farm for $2,600.00 to Alexander Campbell Carlton. This may have been in preparation for the move west.
This seems to be a good place to untangle the confusion about the four Carltons with the same name. The four generations and their marriages are:
Benoni, I married Mary [Polly] Campbell
Benoni, II married 1] Julia Ann Wood and 2] Martha Hill Bagby
Benoni, III married Betty Hugh Bagby
Benoni, IV died at age [6]

MARY ELLEN BAGBY 5, (JOHN CHRISTOPHER 4, RICHARD 3, JOHN 2, JAMES 1) was born About 1834 at "Bunker Hill" in King & Queen County, Virginia and died About 1862 in King & Queen County, Virginia. She married ALBERT GALLATIN GRESHAM January 15, 1855 at Bunker Hill. He was born About 1832 in King & Queen County, Virginia and died About 1861 in King & Queen County, Virginia.
Notes for MARY ELLEN BAGBY:
On the Land Tax books for King & Queen County the name of Albert G. Gresham, who died in 1861, does not appear as a land owner. In 1851 he moved from "Briar Hill", the Gresham home located near Upper King & Queen Baptist Church, and settled in Stevensville. The "Letter of Dismissal" is evidence. He probably chose the Stevensville community in order to work in the little country store partly owned by his older brother, John N. Gresham.
After he married Mary Ellen Bagby the couple may have lived at "Bunker Hill". Their son, Albert, Jr. recorded he was born there in 1861, a month after his father's death. The house burned in 1903 and the present house, also called "Bunker Hill" is on the old site owned by the John Sutton family.

Site Owner Note: No home stands on the property of Bunker Hill today. There is a gate with a hand painted sign marking property as "Bunker Hill". I saw this gate in June 2000. — UPDATE: A home is being constructed on the site of the old homeplace and appears to be very similar to the original structure — July, 2003.

He married MARY THOMAS "TOM" COURTNEY on December 15, 1855. She was born About 1833 in King & Queen County, Virginia and died About 1914.
Notes for GEORGE FRANKLIN [REV] BAGBY: Research submitted by Dan Dunham:
Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Franklin County.
G.F. BAGBY was born in King & Queen County, Va., February 22, 1836; was reared within thirty-five miles of Richmond, and is the fifth son of John and Elizabeth (Courtney) Bagby, of Virginia. His paternal grandfather, Richard, was also born in Virginia, of Welsh descent; he is of English-Scotch on his mother's side. In 1861 G. F. Bagby enlisted in the Confederate Army under Stonewall Jackson in the Fortieth Virginia Regiment, and was chaplain and general army evangelist. He was educated at Richmond, Va., and Columbian University, at Washington, D.C.; graduated at the latter place, as A. B., in 1855; remained one year longer, and in 1856 took the A. M. degree. He returned to Virginia and taught school one session in Hanover County; was ordained a minister of the gospel in 1858; in Westmoreland County, Va., and preached in Fleming County, Ky., from 1866 to 1870. He then moved to Russellville, Ky., and acted as agent of Bethel College; was subsequently appointed trustee and afterward professor; also had charge of two churches in Todd and Christian Counties, Ky., while connected with the college, and remained in Russellville until 1881, when he moved to Woodford County, Ky., and located near Versailles; was pastor of Glen's Creek and Mount Vernon Churches in 1884. He then moved to the city of Frankfort, and took charge of the Baptist Church, and has been pastor ever since. In December, 1857, he married Mary T. Courtney, of King & Queen County, Va., daughter of W. P. and Martha (Campbell) Courtney. Nine children blessed their union, seven yet living: Frederick H., who is located at Kansas City, Mo., and is an engineer on the Missouri Pacific Railroad; Theodore, who is in Kansas City, Mo., in the hardware business; Harry A., in Louisville, Ky., studying for the ministry; George F., Jr. located in Kansas City, Mo., and an engineer on the Missouri Pacific Railroad; Virginia May, in Virginia attending college; Leslie L. H. and Alfred Paul. Mr. and Mrs. Bagby and all their children, except Leslie L. H. (since baptized) and Alfred Paul, are member of the Baptist Church. Mr. Bagby is a Knight Templar, and belongs to Maysville Commandery.

George Franklin was less than a year old when his mother, Elizabeth Courtney Bagby passed away. As a teenager he fell in love with his first cousin, Mary Thomas Courtney, who lived at "Spring Garden" still standing on Route #616 within a mile of Cumnor. Married soon after his graduation at Columbian College in 1857, he became pastor of several churches in Westmoreland County, Virginia, where he served until the war years 1861-1865. He then volunteered as a chaplain for the C. S. A. Upon moving to Kentucky in 1866 he began pastorates that took him to six or seven communities, the last being in the Capital, Frankfort. In 1890 he returned to Virginia and located as pastor of the Farniville Baptist Church. In all probability the Bagby homes were parsonages during his entire ministry.
In the Bagby Bible their marriage date is given as 1855. I believe it is wrong as young men in those days did not marry at 19 and take a wife to college with them. Taylor's accounts of Virginia Baptist Ministers gives 1857 as graduation and marriage date for George Franklin Bagby. E.C.J. 121.

Notes for MARY THOMAS "TOM" COURTNEY:
Where 'Tom' came from: In the book, "A Practical Mystic — A.B. Rudd", on page 17 it states 'Virginia May Bagby, born November 26,1868, in Flemingsburg, Kentucky, was the daughter of George Franklin Bagby and Mary Tom Courtney, both from King & Queen County,Virginia. Her grandfather, John Bagby's home in King & Queen, named Bunker Hill was a prosperous, self-contained little community of its own. Educated for the ministry, George Franklin was a Chaplain in the War Between the States throughout the duration. Even as Bartow's father had left a young wife with little children for that war, so George Franklin left Mary Tom in King & Queen where he intended to settle". — Research submitted by: Helen Rudd.

Notes for JOHN [D.D.] POLLARD, JR.: Source: "John Bagby of Bunker Hill"
Black war clouds of 1861 were increasing their activity, and forebodings were constant of what lay ahead for this country, when Virginia Bagby and John Pollard went ahead with plans to marry on July 9th.
He attended Columbian College, in Washington, D.C., preparing to enter the ministry, following his ordination at Mattaponi Baptist Church. Virginia finished her schooling at Hollins Institute, now Hollins College. Love letters were exchanged between the two young people during all of their separation.
The Reverend John Pollard took up his duties immediately after the wedding ceremony, the couple making their home at Saluda, Virginia until 1870. Simultaneously he served as pastor at Clark's Neck [Now Saluda Baptist Church] and Hermitage at Church View. In future years they were to live in Baltimore, Richmond and Bowling Green, Virginia. 2316 E. Grace Street, Richmond is the only home they owned, built on a lot purchased in 1884.
